A Certain Darkness Is Needed to See the Stars“ (38:51 min.) is an energetic, minimal, polyrhythmic composition. It was played on a single prepared drum set (with aluminium foil), without any loops or overdubs. Time and form dissolve as loops and repetitions take hold. The piece expands and contracts. It changes texture while still maintaining a steady pulsating fluidity. The listener is forced to cede control and relax into it. You never know how long any given theme will stay the same, nor what will follow.
This piece is made to be an introspective somatic journey. A trip trance you can get into through the portals of music and movement. Feeling life pulsating through you, being in the moment; connecting to your body. Dissolving the constructed separation of body and mind. Alone or in a group. And if in a group, then in one which allows for you to bear witness to the experiences of others –hold a caring space for each other, together. A community full of soft, unmasked trust. Allowing for catharsis and transformation. Staying with your emotions. Exploring, expanding, contracting. This active letting go or allowing things to be creates the potential for a therapeutic fusion of listener and music.
I’m a Swiss musician, composer, producer and multi-media-artist currently living in Zurich. As a queer artist I aspire to question norms, use my privileges to help promote community and continuously evolve my queer practice. I’m the artistic director and drummer of the internationally recognized indie groove jazz quintet Ikarus and part of the queer indie rock trio Dalai Puma. These projects and my upcoming album, a drum solo piece exploring the non-dualistic state of life/death, reflects my philosophy: “It’s not our revolution if we can’t dance!” My enthusiasm for exploration is one of my core traits and extends to numerous side projects, including the contemporary Opera “Mitosis – an LSD-Opera”, a ritual performance-duo with Kim de l’Horizon, the speculative fiction audio play “1 Ich A,”, and co-organizing the unconference Utopieverdacht. I am also very passioned in linking activism and the music business. I studied jazz drumming and later classical contemporary composition, both at the Zurich University of Arts.
